Chapter eighteen

Happy Birthday

Erica often had the same dream. She was at a party, glittering dresses and blaring music surrounding her. At the top of the estate’s staircase, a man tapped a spoon against a champagne flute, calling for a toast. The words were muffled as were most details in the dream. It was a hazy blur that felt like a memory she couldn’t quite recall.

But the one clear thing in the room was always the fire.

There was a shout and the toast was stopped. Partygoers shoved past her, clambering for locked exits. The heat of the flames would be the last thing she felt before she woke up. The dream never changed, always ending at the same point. But there was the inkling of something more right beneath the surface, she just couldn’t get to it.

Erica already knew it was Kate at her door that evening. The woman came every morning and night for the past two days. Still not used to the night schedule, Erica had managed to catch each check in. But it wasn’t like it mattered whether she adjusted or not, she barely slept these days, and when she did it was plagued by nightmares.

On her birthday, Kate brought her a dozen cupcakes, courtesy of Lola, for her to enjoy. The bakeries in Mantle didn’t supply her favorite, red velvet. She enjoyed the company, even found herself getting attached to the girl. But even at nine Erica knew attachment would do her no good. The little voice in her head had awakened, telling her that she needed to stay away from Lola, that she’d end up hurting her somehow.

The moment she decided to listen is when she got the premonition. She saw Lola and her dad in their car. A speeding red rover came behind them and smashed into the bumper. The premonition cut off before she could see the aftermath. As Erica had gotten older, her premonitions had gone from short flashes to fully played out scenes. She couldn’t decide whether one was worse than the other.

After school the next day, Erica begged her friend not to drive home that evening, but Lola refused to listen until she explained herself.

“Sometimes I can see things,” Erica had confessed. “I see things happen before they actually do. I saw you get in a car accident.”

She waited for Lola to call her crazy, to walk away and get in the car anyway, but instead, she
